BUS 5612 Cross-Cultural Management Course Information


Course Description

Focuses on methods and practices of managing in different cultures. Examines sources of management conflict due to differences in attitude, value and behavior. Develops intercultural awareness and effectiveness in the context of global business and successful implementation of strategy. Also examines corporate and personal ethical behavior.


Week 1


Lecture: Introduction
Lecture: Globalization and International Linkages
Lecture: Political Legal and Technological Environment
Lecture: Ethics and Social Responsibility

Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Review the process of globalization in the contemporary world and understand the changing balance of global economic power and trade among countries
  • Be able to analyze the major economic systems and recent developments among countries that reflect those systems
  • Recognize the various legal and regulatory environmental issues that MNC’s face when they operate worldwide
  • Review key technological developments and understand their impact on global companies presently and in the future
  • Examine how major ethical issues impact decisions in international management and how MNCs are finding pressure to initiate corporate social responsibility programs in a global environment

Lecture: The Meanings and Dimension of Culture
Lecture: Managing Across Cultures

Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Define the term culture and discuss comparative ways to differentiate it
  • Examine the concept of cultural values and relate some of the international differences, similarities, and changes occurring in terms of work and managerial values
  • Identify the major dimensions of culture relevant to work settings and discuss their effects on behavior in an international environment
  • Identify the strategic dispositions that characterize responses to different cultures            
  • Recognize how cross cultural differences and similarities can impact management strategies

Week 3


Lecture: Organizational Cultures and Diversity
Lecture: Cross-Cultural Communication and Negotiation

Outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the most common categories of organizational culture and understand the interaction with national and MNC cultures
  • Discuss the meaning of multiculturalism and diversity and describe common guidelines and principles that are used in building multicultural effectiveness at team and organizational levels
  • Examine the communication process and identify the upward and downward flows used in international communication
  • Recognize barriers to communication (verbal and nonverbal) and be able to describe ways to overcome international communication problems
  • Compare different negotiating and bargaining behaviors that may improve negotiations and outcomes in different cultural environments

  • Discuss approaches to formulating and implementing strategy
  • Identify the basic steps in strategic planning
  • Examine major types of entry strategies
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages
  • Identify non-traditional types of organizational structures

Lecture: Political Risk and Government Relations

  • Identify common methods for managing and reducing political risk
  • Examine techniques for responding to political risk
  • Recognize challenges and opportunities for managing alliances
  • Review the decision making process
  • Identify cultural differences in decision making
  • Recognize some major difference in how MNCs control operations

  • Examine motivation theories and how they relate to international human resources management
  • Understand the importance of job design, work centrality and rewards in motivating employees on a cross-cultural basis
  • Learn the basic foundation and styles of managerial leadership
  • Compare and contrast leadership styles across cultures
  • Examine recent research and findings regarding leadership across cultures

Lecture: Human Resource Selection and Development Across Cultures

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Examine selection criteria and procedures
  • Discuss expat assignments
  • Describe the training process and types of training for expats

Lecture: Global Virtual Teams

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Examine an overview of global virtual teams (GVTs)
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of global virtual teams
  • Examine the best practices for global virtual teams
