Melbourne FL — Florida Institute of Technology will honor CarMax President and CEO Tom Folliard, a nationally known alumnus high achiever, on Saturday, Nov. 3. He will be awarded the Jerome P. Keuper Distinguished Alumni Award at the Homecoming Awards Gala that evening in the university’s Charles and Ruth Clemente Center for Sports and Recreation.
“This award honors an alumnus who embodies all that is good about the university. This is someone who is in a successful career, known for community involvement and who gives back to the university,” said Bino Campanini, assistant vice president, alumni relations and executive director of the Alumni Association. “Tom Folliard is an ideal example of such a person.”
The 6-foot, 3-inch Folliard was a standout basketball player for the university while he worked toward his bachelor’s degree, which he earned in 1989. He was inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
He went to work for CarMax in 1992, when the company had not yet settled on its current name, and rose through the ranks. Folliard began as senior buyer, moving up through positions as director of purchasing, vice president of merchandising, senior vice president of store operations and executive vice president of store operations, to his current post as president and chief executive officer. In that time, CarMax has grown to become the largest used car dealer in the world and a Fortune 500 company.
Folliard currently makes his home in Richmond, Va.
