PSY 4112 Applied Tests and Measures


Course Description

Multicultural Issues covers how to recognize, understand, and respect the complexity, key concepts, theoretical perspectives, and empirical findings of sociocultural and international diversity.
Requirement: Must be enrolled in Florida Tech University Online.

Course Objectives

Upon completing this course, students will  be able to

  • Understand how tests are developed.
  • Describe and interpret psychometric properties of a test.
  • Construct a content-valid knowledge-based test and personality test.

Week 1


Lecture: Introduction to Measurement and Uses of Testing
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Define measurement
  • Explain why measurement is important
  • Identify uses of testing

Week 2


Lecture: Test Ethics and Test Administration
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Discuss the relationship between examiner and examinee
  • Explain rights and responsibilities of test taker
  • Identify test administration techniques
  • Understand testing ethics
  • Identify ethical issues in testing

Week 3


Lecture: Reliability
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Define reliability
  • Understand issues with measurement error
  • Describe different ways to assess reliability
  • Interpret reliability coefficients

Week 4


Lecture: Validity
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Define Validity
  • Understand relationship between reliability and validity
  • Discuss categories of validity evidence
  • Describe methods of establishing evidence of validity

Week 5


Lecture: Intelligence Testing
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Discuss issues with defining intelligence
  • Explain different theories of intelligence
  • Identify different types of intelligence tests

Week 6


Lecture: Personality Testing
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Define personality
  • Describe the Big Five personality traits
  • Understand ways of measuring personality
  • Discuss issues in personality testing 

Week 7


Lecture: Test Construction
Lecture: Self-Report Measure Construction
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Understand how reliability and validity relate to test development
  • Recognize different item formats
  • Summarize item writing guidelines
  • Sequence steps for developing content valid tests
  • Construct a knowledge-based test
  • Construct a personality test

Week 8


Lecture: Testing and the Law
Outcomes: After completing this module, students will be able to
  • Explain differences between test bias and fairness
  • Discuss EEOC guidelines and explain their importance
  • Describe ways of assessing adverse impact
